Summer is here, and you’re likely planning on taking an adventure before things start to get cooler. As such, you’ll need to make sure that your vehicle is in the shape it should be as you drive. If you’re noticing that your car’s accelerator is not functioning properly, it’s time you brought your car in for an inspection. 2000 Auto gives you a list of issues below that may be contributing to acceleration problems.
Fuel System
If you are noticing problems with your accelerator, such as it being unresponsive when depressed, then you may have an issue with your fuel system. There is a lot to be said for the balance of air and fuel in your system (called “fuel mixture”). When you are running lean, you have too much air and not enough fuel. This could be caused by a clog in your fuel filter or somewhere else in your car. If your fuel injectors are dirty it can also cause this unresponsiveness when you press the pedal. Even your fuel pump can cause sluggishness with acceleration, as not enough gasoline can reach your engine.
Transmission
The torque converter in your car is responsible for transferring power to the wheels as you drive. If it is not functioning properly, it can prevent your car from moving entirely. You might notice a grinding noise, or slipping in the gears as you drive. This is a common reason of acceleration problems.
Vacuum Leaks
A vacuum leak can contribute to slow acceleration because the leak is allowing too much air to flow into your car’s engine. Just like with fuel system problems, it often creates a “lean” fuel mixture, as too much air is in your fuel. This makes it virtually impossible for your car to accelerate as it should. Look for loose hoses in your engine if you notice sluggish acceleration, or let the pros take a look as soon as possible.
Exhaust System
Finally, a fully-functional exhaust system should remove gases caused by engine combustion. It treats the gases and expels them from the vehicle’s tailpipe. If your exhaust system is clogged, then these gases cannot escape, and your poor engine will fill up with them.
