Your tires and wheels, shocks and struts, and steering wheel are all part of your car’s suspension. The suspension puts up with a lot, including absorbing all of the road bumps and supporting your vehicle’s body. 2000 Auto lists below the signs that your car’s suspension is going bad. We can take a look at your suspension if you’re experiencing any of the following things.
Bumpy Rides
As we said above, the suspension helps prevent you from feeling every bump in the road. If you’ve noticed that your ride has been bumpier than normal lately, however, it’s possible that it’s time to replace your shocks and struts. These parts are the specific parts that absorb uneven road surfaces.
Low-Sitting Corner
Each wheel has a leaf or suspension spring. If the leaf spring breaks, your vehicle will sit lower on that wheel. Another sign that you have broken a leaf spring is hearing that wheel clunk when you go over a bump. It’s important to have the suspension spring replaced as soon as possible to avoid further damage.
Oil On the Shocks
Another sign that your shock absorbers need to be replaced is if they have oil on them. This means that the oil inside the shocks is leaking out of them, i.e., they are too old. You can check your shocks for oil by reaching up underneath your automobile and touching them. You likely have shocks on your back wheels.
Pulling to the Side
Your wheel alignment can get knocked out of whack if you have a bad habit of going over bumps too fast or hitting curbs. A sign that the alignment isn’t accurate is your vehicle heading to the side instead of going straight. It will pull to the left or right.
Squatting or Diving
The shocks and struts are definitely going bad if your vehicle squats when you accelerate. Your vehicle’s body should not react to any momentum motion. This includes lurching forward when you apply the brakes and tilting when you turn around corners.
Steering Difficulties
Finally, if you are experiencing difficulties steering your automobile, you have a problem with the steering system or your suspension. You may notice that your steering wheel feels different in terms of how much resistance it gives you or you may hear groaning sounds.
